“Trust tokens”, from Google, the brand you can trust.

I thought “trust tokens” was some over the top bullshit double-speak you made up for a joke. Nope. >_> checks that the link isn’t to The Onion

Books seem to have done an alright job… I doubt this would be high enough volume, but punch cards made out of corrosion resistant metal maybe? or circuit boards with those little holes in them. those can get pretty dense.

While I’m pretty sure my website fits the bill I’m not sure I want my website posted to reddit.

it seems like part of the problem is that SimCity is a one person game with “no goal” instead of a many-person game where all the players have different roles and opposing goals.

Was wondering what the content warning was for. Didn’t plan on feeling things today. Oh well.

Gopher can serve html pages and still <img src=“tacking.pixel.com”> and this is what bad actors would continue to do. Switching underlying protocols won’t fix the problem. Even without html the companies that want that data could still do stuff like getting data out of server logs, or using other unique identifiers in gopher url paths. I dunno, technology probably won’t be able to fix this problem.

That’s a really good point. Unlike the web, Gopher has a chance to be saved from these things. It could be a really good time to draft and RFC or some kind of document about blocking tracking pixels from gopher html pages.

As for the server logs, accessing gophers through tor could help with that.

And yeah we need to also consider jamming the things that incentivize tracking. Good reminder that these problems aren’t solved only by technical means.

In order to deliver a tracking pixel, the user would have to select it, purposefully.

What are the things that a server would need to be considered a tilde-like?

      1. 4

As far as I’m concerned, any public Unix/Linux/BSD server offering shell accounts that spawned in the wake of tilde.club or related itself with the tildeverse would be a fit. Though this is just a quick spontaneous outline and I don’t claim to have this right. Any other opinions?

Thank you. I started writing something to do what par does but never finished. Now I don’t need to waste time doing that. I don’t remember what I was wanting it for… I think I had some file that had whole paragraphs on one line and the terminal wrapped it how fold would without the -s flag.

It sounds like it would be really obvious that it was a fake window if you used a different OS and styling than what the phisher expected. They probably have different skins for each default styling of all the different versions of windows (and MacOS or OS X or iOS or whatever Apple is calling their OS now) that can be selected based on your useragent.

      edit:

Heh. “New” phishing attack “found” by CEO of some company who sells the solution of “use a password manager, like the one we sell!”

Might NCIS also go in the TV Shows portion? (Not that I would suggest actually watching that show.)
