Sorry folks! The problem with RTC was my fault. I let myself be dependent on a domain renewal reminder email from the registrar… and that email never came. I’m renewing it now.

Thanks a lot for all your work. This kind of stuff happen and as we are not paying for anything, we can only be grateful for every minute online ;-)

For me, it raises interesting questions but the outage is part of the life of a project like rawtext.club.

Who will make a Tilde From Scratch?

heh, and what would the ingredients be?

“Trust tokens”, from Google, the brand you can trust.

      1. 2

I thought “trust tokens” was some over the top bullshit double-speak you made up for a joke. Nope. >_> checks that the link isn’t to The Onion

        1. 1

Coming soon, “Confidence Crackers”, from Facebook, the -other- brand name you can trust.

Really good quote from user ~stiray in the Hacker News comment section of this post:

Those were different times, we didnt have 30 types of chocolate bars, zillions of different toys but we had a lot of imagination. Now, my country… the consumption has completely destroyed public morale, innovation and will to actually do something else than be pretty (boys included) and fit and well dressed at youth time, having latest phone and likes on your FB account. I had unique chance to see two very different parts of how society functions and I think we, as humans, are on wrong path.

Thanks for posting this, evn. There are so many interesting parts to this article.

One of the lines that still rings true today is: “Oftentimes the very limitations of a technological device are what allow for its expressive capacities to surface.” Sometimes simpler is better.

One day, you’re feline fine. The next day, it’s an utter catastrophe.

For anyone interested in this, it’s also interesting to know about the site creator, Jason Scott, and the amazing work he has been doing. And, one of his other really cool projects was the BBS Documentary, which I cannot recommend enough.

BBS Documentary: http://www.bbsdocumentary.com/ (also available on YT, if that’s your thing)

        I found the fix!!

upstream lobsters has a 70-day new account period which prevents new users from submitting stories on domains that have never been submitted before as a spam-prevention method.

in the case that this 70-day period hit with a new domain, a mod log was attempted to be created by a hard-coded user account called “inactive-user” (inactive_user.rb)

i’ve created the missing user that was assumed to exist and lowered the NEW_USER_DAYS to 7

        cheers!

This is like that time Andy Warhol painted the soup can. It was so obvious but so inspiring. Have an upvote.

Ben, can you delete this test post?

And in the meantime, anybody want to share comments about Google?

If you’re interested, I’d be ok ceding tildepi.tilde to you in the .tilde DNS system.

      1. 1

        what about pi.tilde

        1. 2

          Or pilde.tilde

      2. 1

Do you think it’d be possible to have pi.tilde? :)

        1. 1

          Sure. Hit up #.tilde on tilde.chat :)

And, btw, it says you cannot write a webserver in awk. That is an error in the blog: https://rosettacode.org/wiki/Hello_world/Web_server#AWK

      1. 2

Probably because not all versions of awk support network programming. But gawk does!

    14. 2

We’re doing some of this in the tildeverse already :)

      1. 3

Yup! I’m going to start encouraging everyone to create how-to guides based on their setups or around technology they use on their server. I’m working on a Linux/postfix/nginx server guide right now too (coming soonish).

I noticed our closest tag to “command line” is just “bash”. What’s the etiquette for suggesting new tags on here?

      1. 2

I can add one for you.

I wonder how well it would work with an IRCd + TheLounge running?

      1. 1

Also, with an automated user account registration/setup, no internet connectivity, and rather than minimal software, install a lot of software. ie, tl;dr, sl, off-line wikipedia, etc etc

        1. 1

Working on it! ~jfaust and I are planning to build one for our local makerspace/library. I already have a user account self-provisioning script written, and we’re thinking about having persistent chat (rather than IRC), a message board of some sort, git, a web server, etc.

      2. 1

ircd would be lightweight but thelounge can require a bit more depending how you configure it

There is an interesting parallel to this in the way many people disengage from participation in the democratic process. It is called the Death Spiral of Democracy (* link below). People become disillusioned with the over-representation of special interest groups in politics, so they disengage from involvement. Reduced participation in the democratic process leaves more room for special interest groups to push their agendas. This further feeds voter disillusionment and the cycle drags government further from the democratic ideal.

      Nice link, dozens!
