I have heard a few of you mention wanting to try making your own tilde server, but are not quite ready to take up the mantle of paying the hosting fees. If this describes you, you may be interested in trying out the free tier VPS from Google’s Computing Platform. I know, I know, it is Google so they cannot be trusted. However, this at least gives you the ability to make a proof-of-concept tilde server without any upfront cost while you figure things out.
