I think that public libraries should offer free email addresses to people, along with some basic web services like a little bit of “cloud” storage and a little bit of hosting space.
In theory that’s a good idea, but most libraries (at least where I live) have very small budgets, and asking them to buy/rent servers and train/pay someone to maintain them is not possible with the money they have
I still think it’s doable, via partnerships. The local unis offered this sort of service. The library could certainly find some partners, being an NGO.
Yeah, 1GB of RAM is not enough to federate with the rest of the matrix homeservers, so it’s only useful for private deployments
